Tree and shrub roots can grow into sewer lines, and prevent normal cleaning and damage the sewer lines. These roots will fill pipes with masses of roots, which quickly catch everything from toilet paper to other debris flowing through the pipe and eventually restrict the flow of water through the pipes. Once the roots are in the pipes they continue to grow which could cause the pipes to collapse.

Clay tile pipes are more easily damages by roots than other pipes such as concrete pipes, and PVC pipes.
